5 Things Monday

5 Facts about me:

  1. I DON’T KNOW HOW TO RIDE A BYCICLE. I know what most of you are thinking, “who doesn’t know how to ride a bike?”… well, I don’t… to my defense, my mom was working 3 jobs and going to college at the same time so she never had a chance to teach us ( my sis and I). I remember my older cousins trying to teach me once when I was about 8 years old, but after hitting the floor the third time I just gave up. Now I wish I knew how to ride a bike and be able to go on long rides by the beach…. One day, maybe….
  2. I am HORRIFIED of mice, rats, hamsters or anything that looks like any of them… even those fake plush ones!! I’m so scared of them it’s not even funny!
  3. I’m so good at multitasking is bad! I think I just get bored working on one thing at a time so I need to have 2 or more things going on! As I’m typing this post I’m also watching a movie, feeding the kid, and texting with the boyfriend! It’s a bad habit that I need to work on.
  4. I went to a catholic, all girls elementary school in Mexico, and one of our classes was actually a “hobby” class where we had to present an embroidery, crochet or knitting project at the end of the semester. I was only six years old when I embroidered my first cross-stitch cloth napkin!
  5. Día de los Muertos is my favorite holiday!! Ever since I was a little girl growing up in México I loved making sugar skulls, putting up an altar with our family, and waking up at 6am to wash my auntie’ grave and spending all day at the cemetery keeping her company! Great memories!

What about you?? What are 5 facts about you?

Growing Up Latino

Julián. I purposely chose a name for my kid that has an accent when you spell it in Spanish. That “á” represents the most precious thing I’m giving my child: my culture. Even before I got pregnant with little J I knew I would raise my kids bicultural, sharing with them the richness of my culture and the beautiful sounds of my language.

If you haven’t noticed, I am very proud of being Latina; I try to embrace my heritage in every way possible, celebrating each part of what makes me who I am. I came to this country at a young age; my mother re married and my step-dad had lived most of his life in the U.S. so we all came along. I was suddenly the “other”, lost in a new country and embracing my culture made me feel closer to home. Don’t get me wrong, I love this country! It has given us so much! We have had so many opportunities here and a great life that we would have not be able to have in my homeland.

However, loving this country does not mean I have to stop being who I am and forget where I come from, and it took some time to understand this. Growing up Latino in this country is not always easy, I faced discrimination and racism and so many times I just wanted to be like everyone else and fit in. Now that I have Julián I want him to learn to love and embrace our culture as much as I do. I want him to grow up celebrating Christmas as well as the Día de los Reyes Magos, help me set up an altar on Dia de los Muertos, be able to switch between English and Spanish easily, (sometimes even mix both), to eat dinner with tortillas, to know his history… but most importantly, to ENJOY and LOVE doing these things. I want him to be proud of who he is, both American and Mexican.

I know this adds a little more work to raise him and that it would not be easy. But I’m ready to do it, knowing that he might choose not to follow my philosophy and it will be OKAY if he doesn’t. After all, that is also why I chose his name, because it sounds good in both Spanish AND English! ;)

5 Things Monday

It is not a secret that I love blogs! I could spend all day browsing blogs and getting to know other people... it's like a huge inspiration board!

Here are 5 blogs I can't stop reading right now and that I'm sure  you'll enjoy as well! (most of them have something to do with babies, sorry, can't help it)

1. Dear Baby. I've been following Melissa since she was about 4 months pregnant with her first daughter. I was a couple of weeks less than her so I immediately related to the pregnancy stories. She now shares her new mommy adventures as her beautiful Everly grows. She has a way of writing that I'm sure will make you fall in love with her and her sweet little family!

2. Attic24. I found Lucy about a year ago and immediately fell in love with her beautiful crochet and colorful life! Coincidentally, she also had a baby a week before my little J was born!

3. Spanglish Baby. Even before I got pregnant I knew I would raise my kid bilingual, and this blog has become an excellent guide! They have great articles by several experts as well as mothers sharing their experiences. Really helpful!

4. Ali Edwards. Ali's scrapbooking is amazing and very artistic! She makes scrapbooking seem so easy! She also shares tons of ideas and helpful tutorials. Really inspiring!

5. Design Sponge. The go-to blog for great design ideas!

Hope you enjoy these blogs as much as I do!
Have a great week!

5 Things Monday

Yes, I know I’m posting Monday’s post on a Tuesday, but my baby got a cold so blogging has been the last thing on my mind. But he’s doing better and I’m sleeping over at my mom’s house today, and when I’m here I barely see the kid!!! Lol

And since I’ve been a mom for 5 weeks now, I want to share with you 5 things I’ve learned about myself ever since:

  1.  I can pull an all nighter without a venti hazelnut latte from starbucks… or any other caffeinated drink… and still function the next day! I never thought this would be possible. Mainly because all my all nighters included at least two trips to starbucks (and usually a paper due the next day)… but seriously, once you have a baby, sleep is overrated!
  2. I have more patience than I thought….
  3. I can sing… or at least try!
  4. I can get ready in less than half hour!!! ( it would take me at least an hour before I had the baby)
  5. And just when I thought I knew what love was, feeling him sleeping on my chest reminds me that I wasn’t even close!

Hope everybody is having a great week!
