Honey Blonde Chica- Michelle Serros

I’m really excited to be back with the book of the month! An unknown guy recommended this book to me while I was browsing the Chicano (Mexican-American) literature aisle at the bookstore. Now I was expecting a story of discrimination, or an immigration story, or poor Latinos struggling, and the usual themes you find in books that deal with Latinos living in the United States. Well, not this book! Michelle Serros presents us with a group of characters and focuses on their lives as teens and not necessarily as “Latinos”… just what my life felt like as a Latina teen growing up in the States, when changing my hair color was more important than the language spoken at home. The novel has a really fresh story of a group of upper class Latino teens and their complicated teenager lives. It’s set in Southern California (the suburbs, near the beach) where a group of friends called “los flojos” struggle to be cool and fit it while keeping their friendship. It also deals with many hardships that teens have to deal with, like peer pressure, the fears, the excitements, the decisions, and all the emotions in between. It has a bilingual air that makes me feel very familiar with the story! And although I am not a teenager anymore I can still relate to the main character Evie as she tries to balance her life as a good daughter, a best friend, finding the first love, all while trying to stay true to herself. I’ve only read the first three chapters so far, but the novel immediately caught my attention and I can’t wait to go back to it and feel like a teen again!

¡El libro del mes esta de regreso! Este libro me lo recomendó un chico desconocido en la librería mientras revisaba varios libros de literatura Chicana (México-Americana). La mayoría de la literatura con personajes Latinos en Estados Unidos cuentan el mismo tipo de historias: discriminación, inmigración, pobreza….¡Pero esta novela es diferente! Michelle Serros presenta un grupo de personajes frescos e innovadores, y se enfoca en la vida de estos como adolescentes y no necesariamente como “Latinos”. Esto me recuerda mucho a mi propia vida siendo una adolescente Latina creciendo en Estados Unidos, ya que en esos tiempos cambiar el color del cabello era mas importante que el idioma hablado en casa. Esta novela cuenta la historia de un grupo de adolescentes Latinos ricos que viven en el sur de California, y que se hacen llamar “los flojos”. El trama se desenvuelve mientras estos chicos tratan de lidiar con las presiones, los miedos, el tratar de “encajar”, las decisiones, y todas aquellas emociones que invaden esta edad. La novela tiene un aire bilingüe muy familiar, y aunque ya no soy adolescente me identifico con Evie el personaje principal; que trata de balancear su vida como hija, amiga, el primer amor, y seguir siendo honesta con ella misma. Solo he leído los primeros tres capítulos, y se que la próxima vez que lo siga leyendo ¡no lo voy a poder dejar! Una novela muy recomendable.
